What is the difference between the use of both prepositions?

I always use "characterized by". You would say something is characterized by.....(and then maybe list a couple of qualities that make up the character of something.) I've never heard "characterized for".
Me neither, but I googled it and I saw it used even in formal scientific contexts. That's why I think there might be some difference in meaning...
