First off:
if we give you a fish now you will probably be able to eat only today and tomorrow you'll be back to square one.
if we teach you how to fish maybe you will be able to eat by yourself.

   No, che classe fa? means a different thing ---> What grade are you? Don't know if this is the proper way to express it, but it's about the level you are at as a student, the year.
