No entiendo esta palabra. Es un apodo de una chica de Honduras. Ella no le gustó su apodo y prefiere su nombre de pila, Josefa. Tal vez el nombre chepa sea una broma.

I think it is not related. Sometimes people just do not like their nicknames. For instance my name is Luis. They call me "huicho" sometimes which is the nickname for "Luis". I really hate it.
That's interesting. I've never heard Jose/Chepe (only Pepe). According to the WR dictionary, chepa was a hump/bump, that's why I suggested hunchback (like jorobado).
Chepe/Chepa specialy used in Central America. In South America, as far as I know, Chepa is not used, instead Chepita is quite common. In Other Hand Chepe is not used at all.

'Pepe' or 'Chepe' are both said but, naturally, Pepe is far more commonly used.

I Am From Ecuador And As Far As I Know The Word "chepa"has A Lot Meanings,,as You Guys Have Said It Means Josefina,but It Also Means "pussy" "vagina" At Least In My Country,,,and Trust Me We Are Very Polite

As a young girl I was nicknamed "Chepa" - my name is not Josefina, or any form of it. When I was young girl, I was gullable, naive, & a clown. As an adult now, each time I return home ( New Mexico) .. . cousins all joke in calling me Chepa. I want to know what the meaning is to this name/nickname is. I dont have a hunch back, but small & petite; happy -go-lucky....What's the deal? I dont like it !!

Besides being a nickname of Josefa and a synonym for joroba, in Ecuador it is an obscenity. Maybe it has a local meaning in New Mexico?

I agree that they may be thinking of the "hunchback" meaning and laughing about the double meaning.

Another possibility is that it may not be a common nickname, and that it may sound old-fashioned to other people. For example, in English, Florence used to be a common name for women, and many Florences were often nicknamed Flossie. Today, those names might sound funny/strange/anticuated to native speakers in a certain region.
Thank you both for responding..and Oh its so refreshing that it is an obscenity in Ecuador (disappointed grin). My name is Stephanie...& you know, "Flossie" is cute..but Chepa..is so uh, ugly. After asking questions @ this to family, I am told there was a local woman by the name of Josefina that was silly & sometimes hit people in the head with her purse.. ( thus, I was lucky enough to be associated this this..) ---- Clearly not who I am, but they think its funny. 👁 Eek! :o

I also come from Ecuador and the other Ecuadorian guy is right: here in our country the word "chepa" refers to "pussy" or "vagina" while I have heard that in Colombia "chepa" means "espalda" (back) not necessarily a hunchback, but simply back. A local girl who I know got pissed when a Colombian guy told her "quita la chepa de la pared" when she was leaning her back to a recently painted wall. She really got offended as the meaning of "chepa" here is totally different. It must have sounded something like "Take you pussy off the wall". Be careful with this word, then.
