Hello, There's this line in "The sinner" Tv show, which the character reading this passage from a book:
"The 'Bazegw Legend' tells a story of De Paor, an Irish settler
on Hanover Island. With his family facing starvation, the God-fearing De Paor sacrificed his daughter on Bazegw Cliff to appease a vengeful God.
Miraculously, ."

Here I don't know what's the meaning of the underlined part. What's the cod here?
Can anyone please explain it to me? Thank you.
Had they been starving because of a shortage of fish? Cod is a variety of fish, and the appeased god could have caused the cod-fish to return.

I don't know... All I got from the story was that passage that I posted here, no background or anything like that.
Perhaps the people of Hanover Island depended on the sea for most of their food, in this instance cod(fish). God disapproved of DePaor's sacrifice of his daughter, and so when the cod returned to bring the islanders back from near-starvation, as a punishment DePaor did not catch any. — ?

Hmm, That makes sense actually... Thanks.
