Command Reverence

Does "command the same level of reverence" below mean "to be influential to the same amount"?

Text:
Contemporary art, then, has become a recognised sign of cultural capital in the last twenty years or so (although, of course, it does not command the same level of reverence as historically validated ‘masterpieces’).

It does not appear to be about influence but respect. Contemporary art is not respected in the same way as historical masterpieces.

It is hard to see what is being compared here, though. What does putting "masterpieces" in quotes mean? Works of art that are generally considered "masterpieces"? That is a very high bar to set, so it is not surprising that contemporary art in general is not revered in the same way. The writer might have made a stronger point by using some term other than "masterpieces".
