conservative rants?

HI,

Could you help me with this expression?

<I spend a few minutes each week reading Michelle malkin's
conservative musings. I almost typed 'conservative rants'. This is just
the kind of thing I'm trying to avoid.>

Why this author almost made a mistake, typing 'conservative rants'?

There is any connection between 'musings' and 'rants'?

We, usually, almost type simillar words, right?
...sun/son, love/live etc.

I can't understand why the author got confused with
'conservative musings' and 'conservative rants'
It seems like a joke--the author doesn't mean that his fingers almost slipped. Michelle Malkin's "musings" are apparently (I can't say I've read her material) closer to rants, and the author wishes to express this humorously.

I assume she has a blog: most bloggers write their thoughts on a variety of issues. These would be called musings.
Michelle is different in that she writes more opinionated pieces, which could be called rants.

Conservative musings is a neutral term. Conservative rants, on the other hand, is a term which indicates that the musings or speech in question is, as the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary puts it under its definition for rant,

1 a : a bombastic extravagant speech b : bombastic extravagant language

Bombastic language is not something which merits respect.

The author evidently thinks of Michelle Malkin's writings as being rants, at least to some extent, and is trying to either think of them neutrally or is trying to adopt a neutral, journalistic stance when writing about them--or both. He's revealing this to the audience presumably to show he is trying to be fair and neutral.

Addition: I agree with xqby that the author was making a joke, but it is at least possible that the joke is more at his expense than at the expense of his subject. It would take more context to determine that.

The author may not agree with the "conservative musings" and may therefore view them as "conservative rants."
The author probably wants to stay unbiased or open-minded, and so calling Michelle Malkin's writings "rants" would be biased/slanted. By referring to them as "musings" the author is trying to refrain from judging/commenting on the content.
