Covert operations!! Ultimo termine criptico della giornata.

Ho gia' visto che questo tema e' stato trattato nel Forum English-Spanish, ma siccome conosco poco lo spagnolo non sono stata molto illuminata.
Ho anche guardato wikipedia che mi spiega esattamente cosa sono, ma non mi da grandi ispirazioni...

Una parte di me vorrebbe tradurre come "operazioni sotto copertura", forse una traduzione un po' "facilona", un'altra parte vorrebbe tradurre come "operazioni segrete". Chi devo ascoltare??

Ho trovato quest'espressione in un testo che parla dei primi presidenti americani, che avevano l'abitudine di mandare gente in altri stati a fare cose, ovvero covert operations.

Secondo me, "sotto copertura" significa semplicemente "undercover (operations/agent/cop ecc)", cioe' una cosa un po' diversa, in cui un agente, o piu' agenti, nascondono la loro vera identita'...
"Segreto" is the right adjective. This means that the whole operation itself must not be revealed to the public at large. At least not for 25 years or whatever. It's an official secret, basically, rather than just an operational device or strategy.
OK, there's some overlap, because "undercover operations" may also refer to "covert operations", because such actions are "covered" by state secrecy, but as a general principle I think the division between the terms is a safe one.
Usare "Segreto" può andare ma in questo caso penso sia meglio "in incognito".
A "covert operation", here in the US, is one where the identity of the sponsors is kept secret - the operation itself can have a very public nature ( ex. a military coup ) , the active participants can be public figures ( ex. generals and admirals ), what is secret is the link with the sponsor and the identity of the sponsor.

How to translate it in Italian ? "Operazioni segrete" mi sembra impreciso - molte operazioni speciali , condotte da personale militare o paramilitare senza la caratteristica della 'deniability', se vanno bene, cioe' senza che vengano scoperte, rimangono segrete. Pensiamo alle 'extraordinary renditions' - che non sono 'covert operations' ma 'clandestine operations', e che pure si fa di tutto per far rimanere segrete.

Su google vedo che si parla anche di 'operazioni coperte'.
