In the book 'A Christmas Carol' written by Charles Dickens,

"Scrooge was not much in the habit of jokes, nor did he feel, in his heart, by any means waggish then."

What is the meaning for 'cracking'?
Thanks...
My Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary here by my desk gives this as one of the definitions of "crack":
to tell, especially suddenly or strikingly (crack a joke)

I am surprised that the dictionaries that you must have consulted did not have this definition.

When you are not sure of the meaning of a word, you could first try looking in the WR dictionary using the link at the top of this page. Try crack. Any other good English dictionary should also have this meaning.
Thank you for your kind advice..
I always search my dictionary first...but since 'crack' has many meaning in the dictionary, I had no idea which definition is right for this sentence.
Thank you anyway!!👁 Smile :)
So, what is the part of speech for 'crack'? I believe this crack is verb but with '-ing', it is adjective. Right?
You should always check our online dictionary before you post a question. It may have an answer if your dictionary doesn't. It has this definition of crack:

8.
tell (a joke).

If you do check our dictionary and still have questions, you should tell us that you checked, and explain why the dictionary definitions didn't answer your question.
