The Big Bang Theory Season 08 Episode 12

Right before the line, Penny asked Amy if Penny really forces Amy to do things.
Amy: Yeah, but it’s okay.
Penny: How is it okay?
Amy: I promised myself, if I ever got friends, I’d do whatever they said. Really, I’m lucky you found me before a cult did.

I am not sure what the cult means after looking up in dictionaries. Please help.

Knowing the definition of a cult probably doesn't help to understand the cultural reference. Modern-day cults often try to recruit members. The people who are most likely to join cults are those who are lonely and unhappy, people who want to lead a disciplined life in a group of like minded people with a strong leader and a very definite structure, way of life and belief system.
'Cults' is generally speaking used in a derogatory way because in some the members were very badly treated, like slaves, and lost touch with their families and the outside world.

Amy means "I'm lucky you found me before a cult did, because they would have found it very easy to brainwash me into doing whatever crazy thing they wanted me to do".
