What is the meaning of "da"? I think it might be an abbreviated form of "day"?, Thanks:

"When they saw off Dai Evans's da
The whole thing was done very nice:
Bethesda was packed to the doors,
And the minister, Urien Price,"

Kingsley Amis's "Fforestfawr". By the way, these are the first lines of the poem.
Guess it not Defense Attorney seeing as it's seemingly a Welsh subject. Maybe da is a shortening of dad(?)
Is it set in Ireland? "Da" is "Dad" in Ireland, as far as I know. To paraphrase: "When they held the funeral for Dai Evan's father..."
Dear JamesM, it is not set in Ireland, it is set in Wales, Bethesda is a small village in the north east of Wales
There are a number of Bethesdas in different parts of Wales, but Bethesda is a common name for non-conformist chapels all over Wales. In this case the chapel was full for the funeral of the fictional Dai Evans' father.

... where non-confirmist means they are Protestant Christian but are not part of the Church of England, the established state religion in England and Wales. For example, they might be Methodist or Baptist.
Just to confirm - "da", in a Welsh context, means "dad"/"father".

In Wales the Anglican church is known as the Church in Wales, and is no longer the established church.
Dad is one of the few words that modern English has taken from Welsh (= dad in Welsh). Father in Welsh is tad. Da is a familiar/abbreviated form of one of these, though the word da itself translates into English as good.
