Digression

Hi everyone,

I wanted to use the word "digression" in a sentence, and I came up with the following. I am not sure whether I used it properly or not.
If I didn't, then please suggest me, without recommending alternatives or synonyms, how could I?

<We were discussing the classic modulation techniques, and somehow, our discussion turned towards the future of Jazz music. So, I lay into them demanding lay off the digression and start talking about the modulation again.>

Yes, that's correct. But the repeat of "lay" with two different meanings is less than elegant.
