dopehead

Hello,

A dopehead is someone who just smokes weed, or people who take other drugs (usually stronger and dangerous) are also referred as dopeheads?
Would be the same referring to someone as a dopehead, or as a drug addict?
Would a heroin or cocaine addict be called a dopehead?

Thank you in advance.
The use of "dope" to mean marijuana is outdated. Today, at least in the U.S., it usually refers to heroin.
Thanks Egmont.
l was referring to the word "dopehead" the person who smokes pot (that is a more up to date term) not whether "dope" is applied to marijuana.

Logic: Since "dope" does not mean marijuana today, "dopehead" does not mean a person who uses marijuana today.
Logic: Since "dope" does not mean marijuana today, "dopehead" does not mean a person who uses marijuana today.
Logic: given that M-W says that a dopehead is someone who frequently/habitually uses illicit drugs and given that marijuana is not legal is the US, it could refer to someone who is addicted to marijuana (or any other illicit drug).👁 Smile :)
.
I see.
l was asking because l read the term dope head translated in Spanish as "porrero" a word used only for people who smoke weed.
But as you pointed out dope head=drug addict (any kind of drug)

It was all about the seriousness of the term.
whether being called a dope head sounds as bad as being called yunkie. l interpreted dope head as a light category in doing drugs, compared to junkie which is usually reserved for heroin addicts.
Ok, l think l found it,
pothead or pot head, would express a "lighter" kind of drug addict, someone just smoking pot (marihuana)

Thank you.

Yes, pothead is defined by Lexico (Oxford Dictionaries) as A person who smokes cannabis. - derived from 'pot' being slang for cannabis.

They also list crackhead as: A person who habitually takes or is addicted to crack cocaine. while dopehead is simply: A person who uses drugs, especially habitually; a drug addict.

So while 'dopehead' could refer to the taking of either 'soft' or 'hard' drugs I wouldn't personally use it to describe a heroin/crack cocaine addict.
Thank you very much Donny,

I was going nuts trying to understand the nuances.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard “dopehead” in real life. I’ve heard “pothead” and “crackhead.”
If I heard “dopehead” I’d think junkie (crackhead, heroin addict). Pot users are not dopeheads. But this word sounds kind of corny and old-fashioned IMO, I wouldn’t use it.
Yes, pothead is a well known word that refers to marijuana smokers specifically.
