Dear all
Please tell me what's meant by "dynamo" in the following context, taken from "1919" by John Dos Passos. Please note there could be no generator (dynamo) noise in the location i.e. Hotel Crillon of Paris which was a very famous and luxurious hotel and site for lots of political meetings at that time (1919):
The corridors of the Crillon were lively as an anthill with scuttling khaki uniforms, marine yeomen, messenger boys, civilians; a gust of typwriter clicking came out from every open door. At every landing groups of civilian experts stood talking in low voices, exchanging glances with passersby, scribbling notes on scratchpads. Miss Stoddard grabbed Dick's arm with her sharp white fingers. "Listen... said Dick.
Could all that noise produced by those people be compared and likened to the noise produced by a dynamo?

I don't think the sound of typewriters and people talking could be literally compared to a dynamo. I think the continuous clacking and the buzz of conversation combined with the general business gives the impression that a lot of energy is being generated, as if by a dynamo.
Thank you dear Cagey
You've described it perfectly. Thanks again
