Unfortunately, the sentence is not grammatically correct. If, by "editor", you mean the person who does the editing, it would be "the editor" in which case, it would be a noun.

Giving us the whole sentence makes a huge difference, amateurr. If you had provided this in your first post, it would certainly have saved time.

What Betty means is that she works her way to the position of editor at the magazine. It's a job title. She becomes an editor. It's still a noun.
