Me pregunto por qué se dice "el rap" o "el rock" cuando se trata de una abreviatura de "la música rock y la música rap"??
I'd say...

1) The gender given to neutral foreign words is always a little arbitrary, and is often based on the "feel" of the word more than any kind of grammatical criterion.

2) Musical genres can be both masculine and feminine. You could say "la música flamenca" if you are treating the word as an adjective, but as a genre, it's "el flamenco".
Hi both,

The funny thing is I've always said "el flamenco" and "la música flamenca" without thinking about it, but a pupil of mine asked the question and I went with levmac's first answer.

Thanks for your input.
