Except + verb(-ing)

Namaste,
Dear members.

Please clear my confusion.
If "except" is a preposition in #1, shouldn't there be a verb in its -ing form?

1- We don't do much in the evenings except watch television.

Are they both right?
The verb form after except mirrors the main verb.

We don't anything except bridge. (we play bridge)

We're not anything except for the bus.
(we're waiting)
