Hello,

what does "fl." mean in this phrase, please?

"It was Ptolemy of Alexandria (fl.AD 127-51), the most successful writer of textbooks of all time, who made astrology into an international creed."

I cannot find any explanation for this "fl" - could you help me, please?

Thanks!
Hi reka

It's the abbreviated form of the Latin word "floruit" - see this Wiki article:
Floruit (pronounced /ˈflɔrju.ɪt/, often abbreviated fl. or flor. and sometimes italicized to show it is Latin) is a verb meaning 'flourished', which denotes the period of time during which a person, school, movement or even species was active or flourishing
