Bonjour
A question majorly at natives and experts, but others nonetheless;

"Suddenly lots of water flooded in through the entrance..."

I so far have got:
("Soudainement, beaucoup de l'eau [ont envahi] l'entrée")

1 envahi l'entree (invaded)
2 afflué dans l'entrée (poured into)
3 inondé l'entrée (flooded)
4 venu à l'entree(came into)
5 apparut à l'entrée (appeared at)
6 émergé à l'entrée (emerged at)
7 jailli à l'entrée (gushed/sprang in)
8 coulé à l'entrée (flowed in)
9 (other - - - your suggestion svp)

I'm not sure if this type of question is allowed, but if it is, could you respond by simply quoting, or posting the number at the start of each line
Merci beaucoup, Many thanks

Among other possibilities : une grande quantité d'eau inonda l'entrée / s'engoufra dans l'entrée.
Thanks jetset. Much appreciated. I used "une grande...inonda l'entree"
("Soudain, beaucoup d'eau/une grande quantité d'eau/un torrent d'eau/un raz-de-marée [ envahi] l'entrée")

1 envahi l'entree (invaded)
2 afflué dans l'entrée (poured into)
3 inondé l'entrée (flooded)
4 arrivé dans l'entree(came into) (/!\ arrivée, not "a")
5 apparut à l'entrée (appeared at) (/!\ same as above, use "être" and therefore please match gender)
6 émergé à l'entrée (emerged at)
7 jailli dans/par l'entrée (gushed/sprang in)
8 coulé à l'entrée (flowed in)
9 surgit dans l'entrée (suddenly appear)
la pie niche haut, VanOo, and jetset, I express my appreciation with this:👁 Big Grin :D
.
So far, i think La pie niche haut's
Suggestion :
Soudain, l'entrée fut submergée
(avec ce verbe, pas besoin de préciser qu'il y avait beaucoup d'eau !)
is best. It describes what actually happened (I experienced being in a flood, and the entrance was submerged, to be honest)
So, jetset, you warning in post #6 is valued, but i think it works here 👁 Smile :)

And since I like VanOo's 'surgit' too much as well, I think I'm going to slot it into my text somewhere...

Many thanks, merci beaucoup,
InV15iblefrog.
PS any further posts will still be appreciated. 👁 Smile :)
Une grande quantité d'eau s'est engouffrée dans ...
thanks petit1 but
Among other possibilities : une grande quantité d'eau inonda l'entrée / s'engoufra dans l'entrée.
is yours the same as jetset's?
It seems you have used engouffrée
and jetset, has used engoufra
also, you have included s'est, whereas jetset has put the s' onto engoufra

I used google, and it seems that engouffrer is not reflexive. I'm confused...👁 Confused

Edit:
did more googling, and found that jetset has used the past historic engouffra, whereas you've used the compound perfect tense. (eg. il est engouffré)

thanks VanOo.
as to keep the thread on-topic, I'll find out the difference using google. thanks for that.

Edit: yes, just found out. I suppose that the passé composé is better, since it is less formal.
Thanks VanOo, jetset and petit1

You are native french, so I'll take your advice. Actually, using passe simple may be better, because I may be rewarded with more marks if I use another tense.
Thanks for that. 👁 Smile :)
Sorry, Jetset. I didn't see that you had already suggested "s'engouffrer".
petit1, I still appreciate your work; because of your slightly different addition, I just learnt a new tense!
