Hi guys,

I read that "period" is American while "full stop" is British. What about the following?

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Afghanistan war, was also outraged. “Never should leaders of a terrorist organization that hasn’t renounced 9/11 and continues in evil be allowed in our great country. NEVER. Full stop,” the Illinois Republican said.

When reading a telegram or similar message (for example, a coded message) where each word matters, people say "stop" for each period, then say "full stop" for the final period that ends the message. This is especially common in the military.

Your example uses "full stop" after "NEVER" to add emphasis. He is saying the word NEVER ends the message. There is nothing more to say. There is no "if", no "maybe", no "usually", no special situations, no exceptions. Never.

But that term is never used in American English for the end of a normal sentence. Period. 👁 Smile :)
