Dear All,
What verbs collocate with 'gambit' as 'a clever action which is intended to achieve an advantage'? To make a gambit? To do a gambit?
My sentence: He ... a gambit in order to take advantage over his competitors.

I've also hear, "an opening gambit" (also chess-related).
But that's not a verb. You still have to play that opening gambit.


I missed that point entirely. Absolutely it is not a verb yet. I think if we work at it we can "verbize" the word. Look what happened to "Miranda warnings" which became "mirandized". (Personally I hope it never happens.)

Suppose Apple has just unveiled a low-cost IPhone that's supposed to gear for the low end users who are looking for a smartphone on the cheap. Can I use "The new low-cost IPhone is the latest gambit by Apple to capitalize on the lower end of the smartphone market."?

I just realized that "opening gambit" would be a better option if the low-cost IPhone was their first foray into the lower end of the market
Hmmm... It is the latest in a very long line of marketing gambits by Apple.
