retro en english es lo mismo que en spanish y signifia hacia atras.
Aqui podria querer decir que en sus disenos utilizaba materiales del pasado.

If someone went "retro with his materials" then he used materials that were commonly used in the past. Please note: In retro, it is not the age of the materials that is being spoken of, but their use in a style of the past (I think period materials would be called "vintage").
