Hack

A sentence from a book about alchemy reads,

While the gold was the ultimate, 'purest' outcome of an alchemical experiment, the Philosopher's Stone acted essentially like an alchemical hack. It was the active agent that made the transformation possible.

How will you interpret "hack" here? Thank you!
It has a new meaning that I see used in a certain British online newspaper, and it annoys many readers: a "hack" is a "new, useful and easy way of doing something", a "trick".
