In an adapted version of Heidi, by Johanna Spyri, Heidi was taken to live with her grandfather at his cabin in the Alps mountains, and one day, he took her to a village down the mountain.
Why "even as" was used? I don't see any contrast, I mean isn't it natural for "villagers" to like "rustic ways"?At each stop, Heidi’s kindness brought smiles to everyone’s faces, even as they noticed her rustic ways. As she and her grandfather began the journey back up the mountain, Heidi looked back at the village with a full heart. She had made new friends in the valley as well as up in the Alps.
