In the classic song "Make 'Em Laugh" from the movie "Singin' in the Rain" there's a line that goes:
"Go out and tell 'em a joke
But give it plenty of hoke".
What does the word "hoke" mean in that context?
The noun is much less common than the adjective. In a song, they needed a rhyme for "joke." Even native speakers who haven't heard of "hoke" would know what "hokey" means and be able to understand the song. hokey - WordReference.com Dictionary of English
