I'm perplexed

"Sally had a third again as many as David, who had a third as many again as Francis. Altogether they had 111. How many did David have?"

I have absolutely no idea what the above means. What's this whole "third again" deal? And anybody might help me with the answer?

Sally had 1/3 more items than David, who had 1/3 more items than Francis. Altogether they had 111 items. How many items did David have?

Does this help?
Is it like "You'll need all that and half as much again."?
Who talks like that anyway? Is it like some kinda mathematical jargon?
Thanks for your help, Chaska Nawi!
Your name is a bit weird though, is it in a native American language?

Where did you read it, Iskia? It sounds like something you'd find in a textbook.

Iskia, it would be helpful if you'd make your thread titles more descriptive than "I'm perplexed." For example, for this thread, a title like "a third again as many" would be appropriate. 👁 Smile :)
See the site's Rules/FAQ on this point and the use of standard English.

Well, for your information, "kind of", as you have so meticulously rectified, is no where near "the use of standard English". So your correction is quite pointless there, don't you think? Hope you wouldn't take offense. 👁 Smile :)

But thanks for pointing out my improprieties. I will try my best to work on the title and my use of language next time.

Iskia,
Welcome to the forums. Please consider that when senior members offer helpful advice, it is appropriate to consider it, question it if clarification is needed, or reply in a calm tone.

Francis had X items, David had 1.333X items, and Sally had
1.77 items (1.33 x 1.33), therefore they had a total of ~4.1X items, which = 111. X=27

proof:
Frances had 27
David had 1 1/3 x 27 = 36
Sally had 1 1/3 x 36 = 48
27+36+48=111

Sorry if i came off a little rude, just a bit on edge today. Actually Elizabeth gave me great help in another thread, so please don't take it personally.

As for cuchuflete, your use of algebra together with decimal fractions is mathematically inaccurate in my opinion. Since 1/3 equals 1.333... ending with infinite 3.
My way of solving the problem:
Francis has 9x items, thus David has 12x items, thus Sally has 16x items. All together they have 37x items=111, thus x=3. The rest would be easy to figure out.

Many thx for all your help.
Thanks for the reply Iskia.

As for cuchuflete, your use of algebra together with decimal fractions is mathematically inaccurate in my opinion If rounding is inaccurate, you are correct. . Since 1/3 equals 1.333... ending with infinite 3.

And we arrive at the same conclusion, by slightly different methods. In any event, it's clear that you now know what 'a third more' means. 👁 Smile :)

Many thx for all your help.
