indiscreet

The scene takes place in 1938. The Chicago society flocks to a divorce trial.

Snobbish women speaking :

Woman 1 : She could have had a settlement but she would insist upon the custody of the child.
Woman 2: I don't know that I blame her.
Woman 1: My dear Eloise, if one is foolish enough to be indiscreet, one must expect to pay the penalty.

How do you understand "indiscreet" here ? What do you think she means?

Well, the idea I get is that 'she' had an extramarital affair and was found out ('being indiscreet', possibly because she made no attempt to conceal the affair), which resulted in a divorce (husband suing wife for infidelity). The penalty is that she loses custody of the child👁 Smile :)

Discreet: A man taking his mistress to a motel that is 75 miles away from where he and his wife live. 👁 Wink ;)
