I am reading a poem and I am stuck on this word:

Tras un futuro mejor el lar nativo deje, y i tienda levante en medio de Nueva York.

Please help! Thank you!
El hogar nativo
gracias!!!!!!!
The Lares were the Roman gods of the hearth and hence the home. Note that Spanish uses el hogar for both these meanings.
