lay priest

France, French
Context: "Ask the Mormons, whose leaders from the founding of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the mid-1800s declared that blacks
were not qualified to become lay priests, because theirs was an inferior race."

I'm not sure of the meaning of "lay priest" here?

In other words, what's the difference between a priest, and a lay priest? Thanks!

The term "lay" as used here, is specific to the Morman church and their ecclesiastical organisation.

The general term is applied to someone who performs a similar role to a member of the clergy, but is not ordained - and usually not paid. There can be lay priests, lay ministers, lay clergy etc.
