L'extase

I was the other day surprised in conversation by some non-verbal reactions to the word extase. I had been asked why a butterfly in one of my photos - I'm a nature photographer - had both its antennae down. Not having any very sensible ready answer I replied that in butterflies it was un signal de l'extase. This remark caused a good deal of amusement, and I wasn't sure why. If I got an impression, it was that l'extase meant orgasm in French, yet this meaning isn't clear from the dictionaries. Perhaps I had made some other solecism. What do people think?

I sold the photo, nonetheless, amid a lot of giggling.
Well captured!
I don't know if "extase" is always about "orgasm" or other climax but it is certainly very strong.
Hello,
No help about "extase" but, for the butterfly, it was probably smelling something - the antennae have odour receptors.
It's a bit like: "Yea, it's because this butterfly was stone" xD

But the word extase can have a lot of meanings: extase because of sex or drugs for example.

P.S: correct my mistakes please!!
Hi Zala, and thank you. So the joke, you think, was the suggestion that the butterfly was high on drugs (ston)? I hadn't thought of that. You may be right. I got the impression that the young male members of this large party were more ready to show that they were amused than were the women. That was how I got the impression that some sexual reference had been lost on me.
