I beg your pardon for my stupidity of the subject. There is such a dialogue in 'The Last Camellia' by Sarah Jio:

“Wait, there’s a lingerie section?” he asked playfully.
I snatched the book from him and flipped to the back, to a page detailing the various kinds of petticoats of the time.
“For your reading pleasure,” I said, laying the book in his lap.
Rex grinned. “I guess I had something a little different in mind when you said ‘lingerie.’ ”

What might he have had in mind except for underwear?

Underwear was exactly what he had in mind. He heard "lingerie" and expected pictures of the kind of skimpy, sexy undergarments word today. What he saw was pictures of petticoats - still undergarments, but things that look more like dresses. Boring and bland by today's standards.
If you Google petticoat 1930s and lingerie 2000 you'll get a very clear impression of the difference!
