The source (see here) is the John Grisham novel The Appeal. It is specified a few paragraphs before this quote that the character has poured a "single malt," i.e. a single malt whiskey, as Loob suggested.

A pull usually describes an enthusiastic drink taken from a bottle or large glass (say, of beer). A long pull even more so. It sounds as though his thirst increased over the course of the paragraphs, if he was eventually swigging whisky out of the bottle or taking it in pints...
