marital kitchen

<< Topic: marital kitchen >>

Hello, could anyone help with phrase in the title?
There is a couple who got divorced, but before that they had agreed to a magazine piece about their "marital kitchen".
I searched the dictionaries, it seems the writer used this phrase out of humour or sarcasim, correct me if I am wrong please.
From: I Remember Nothing by Nora Ephron
Thanks,
Autumn

Hello Autumnwhispers. 👁 Smile :)

We can <use> the word marital to describe anything that is shared during a marriage.
I would suppose that the 'marital kitchen' would be the kitchen they shared. The article may have been about the kitchen and how it was designed, or maybe the article was about how they shared or didn't share kitchen duties -- such as cooking or dish washing, etc.

As Cagey says, "marital" is an adjective which describes anything that is shared during a marriage.
If you go back to your text, you will see that Ephron first refers to the article as just an "article about our kitchen."
...a photographer turned up at my former apartment to take a picture of my husband and me for an article about our kitchen.

A few sentences later, when she writes "marital kitchen," it serves to point out that the reporter thought that she was writing an article about the kitchen Ephron shared with her husband when, in fact, this was no longer the case.

The reporter involved with the article was livid that I hadn't remembered, hadn't called, hadn't told her, and was no doubt angry that I'd agreed to do the interview about my marital kitchen when I had to have known I was getting a divorce.
