I think people do say
mental breakdown, but a
nervous breakdown is a slightly more technical term suggestive of a more complete collapse into depression. I think if someone talks of mental breakdown they may well be trying not to say nervous breakdown, because they want to suggest that whoever it is would be OK for a week off work, rather than several months, at the least.
