Hello there,

Could someone tell me what's the meaning of "Merlin's pants" in french please ?

Here is the whole sentense:
He is a stupid boy for !

Thank you !
salut!

je pense que ca veut dire la meme chose que "for heaven's sake" alors tu peux peut etre le traduire par "pour l'amour du ciel". sinon une fois dans un livre j'ai déja vu "par la barbe de merlin".alors c'est peut etre ca.voila!

For a little more context, there is a rock group called "Merlin's Pants". I don't think this is enough to explain this strange sentence.

Do you have some more context please?
Yeah sure,

“What the bloody hell do you mean you came willingly with him? He is a stupid boy for Merlin’s pants! He is supposed to hate you!”

The guy who is talking is surprised and very angry...

That's a bit weird I agree...👁 Wink ;)

I've never heard the expression "Merlin's pants" except in the Harry Potter books. It might have some more general application, but it's used there to mean "for heaven's sake", according to one more expert than I in these matters.
Vu dans Urban Dictionary:
1. Merlin's pants 👁 Image
3 thumbs up 👁 Image

An exclamation of surprise or exasperation, used in the seventh Harry Potter book by Hermione. Alternatively "Merlin's most baggy Y fronts".
"Merlin's pants! This has to be the stupidest president ever."
Yes, I believe this expression is a little unusual in that we can name with relative certainty its creator - one J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter books. 👁 Wink ;)
It is indeed used in the same way "for heaven's sake" and so on.
ok everyone

I'm not sure there is something to do with Harry Potter...

And you're probably right for "for heaven's sake", I mean I hope so 👁 Big Grin :D

It's easier to understand^^

but anyway many thanks
ok everyone

I definitely never heard of this expression before it was used in Harry Potter. I suspect that from these literary origins it is progressively becoming engrained in certain factions of society's vocabulary (i.e. Harry Potter fanatics 👁 Wink ;)
