Marxism and particularly anarchism are taboo (there’s a reason for that), so what we are left with has moved beyond normative assertions to empirical arguments. All based on the fundamental presumption that hierarchical structures are an unavoidable necessity of human society and that these must “inevitably” lead to oligarchie.

Could you please explain what the bolded term means in the context? Thanks.
Normative assertions should be assertions about what is right (morally* correct) or wrong.

*Or perhaps intellectually correct.
