Rather than I play football often, we'd be more likely to say I often play football or I play football a lot.
From a US perspective: I play football a lot, or I play football all the time (the exaggeration is common)
And before anybody starts in on whether it's football or soccer - that's not the point. The question is about a conversational way to discuss frequency.
No. If you say "I am playing football" you are playing it now. It is not a habitual action, so you cannot use "often".
