overhead notch

Hello everyone!

I'm reading "Train" by Alice Munro. There's a guy who jumps off a train. Before jumping he takes "his ticket stub out of its overhead notch".
Could you answer, please, what is this "overhead notch"?
The scene is laid in 1940s in Canada.
It's a place to stick your ticket so that the conductor can review it as he comes down the aisle. (This allows you to, for instance, sleep without having to be woken.)
I imagine it's a small holder of some sort (perhaps on the underside of the overhead luggage rack) where passengers are supposed to display their ticket stub so that it's easily visible to the ticket collector/conductor. It saves him or her from having to ask people for their tickets, or wake people up.

Cross-posted with the well-traveled Glen.
Thank you for your answers!
