painterly aesthetic

Hi,all

I wonder what this phrase “painterly aesthetic” means.

From the above page, the picture seems to have been made some effects which are related to a painting. But does “painterly aesthetic” only refer to aesthetics of painting (could it be a sketch or something) ? What’s the difference between “painterly” and “pictorial” in this case?

Thank you.

painterly: in the manner of an artistic painter; such as a painter would do; often with overtones of "classic art". (A relatively rare word.)
pictorial: Although pictorial can have that definition, the commoner/usual usage is "consisting of, expressed in, or of the nature of, a picture or pictures."
Pictorial is to do with the subject of an artists paintings. One looks at the painting and thinks of the scene portrayed. Painterly is more to do with the technique of painting. How the artist applies the paint. Does he use impasto and build up layers of paint, how he uses colour, does he use big blocks of a single colour. The word can be used in other connections (photography in this case but it could be pastel or woodcuts) where the work is considered as if it were a painting and judged as such. Thus one is not worried about whether it resembles the subject, but rather the internal aesthetic qualities.

The link given shows that this is the title or heading of an article. In other words, it is telling us what the article is about.

The meaning is: this article considers the way in which Sarah Moon makes her photographs resemble abstract paintings.
One look at the image shown is enough to confirm that it does look like an abstract painting.
