Hi, folk of WR members.
A friend of mine has won a prize in cash and he is required to provide his own
"password preference"..
What is password preference?

It difficult to say without more context. The only thing I can think of is that they literally want to know what he wants for a password.

Of course the logical question would be why he needs a password if he won a prize.

I'm a little suspicious. If the prize is not legitimate it might be a phishing attempt (search google for "define: phishing").

My friend has won this prize and he has to fill out an application form mentioning his all information including"Password preference"so as to transfer his prize
If this is a prize that requires private information about passwords and bank account numbers I would be extremely suspicious.

He has received an e-mail says:

Dear Selected winner,
This is to inform you that you have been selected price of (XXX,XXX,XX) in cash...contact the verification department by providing your reference XX/XXXXXXXX/XX ..
When my friend contacted them their answer is this:

"...we have done all necessary verifications.You are to contact the paying bank with your contact details for the transfer of your fund.
Fullname of owner
current address
state
age
marital status
occupation
current e-mail
password preference

I advised my friend not to hand out his private information .It seems to me is a fraudulent e-mail, itn't it?
The next contact will ask for your friend's bank account details in order to facilitate the transfer of funds.
Shortly after, there will be a transfer of funds - OUT OF your friend's bank account - and his identity will have been used to apply for all kinds of credit facilities.
