paycheck

Hello!

Here's the author describes in a humorous way the hopes and dreams of a college graduate:
"She is sleeping soundly, dreaming of the exciting days ahead as a twenty-someting with a paycheck."

Is "paycheck" here what is called "salary"?

Thank you in advance
It is the weekly/semi-weekly or monthly cheque that she receives from her employer. It is not her "salary" per se. Her "salary" is the amount of money that she's been hired for. In other words, her "salary" may be $1,000.00 per month and if she's paid weekly, her "paycheque" each week is $250.00 (less taxes, etc.).

And how much is it "twenty-something"? Is it a two-digit figure?
'A twenty-something' is a person in their twenties - 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 or 29 years old. You can use the same construction for any decade - for instance, I recently (ahem!) became a 'thirty-something'.
I would like to point out that "salary" is generally used as a monthly compensation for services and might not vary from month to month although the number of hours worked might. "Wage" generally refers to compensation based on hours. "Montlhy salary" and "hourly wages".

In terms of the original statement, "paycheck" just means, figuratively, that she has a paying job.

"Salary" is not necessarily connected to monthly remuneration. Much of the American newspaper industry pays by the week, although paychecks might be distributed every two weeks.

The school district from which my wife retired pays by the school year with pay (1/12 of the total amount) distributed monthly - insofar as paychecks still exist in the U.S. since the movement is towards direct deposit in the employee's bank account.
