I'm trying to translate this sentance, perched out is not in my english dictionnary. Thank you !

perched out ? Voilà une tournure inattendue!

The usual expression is: Grey hair stuck out from under his hat

but the author has replaced stuck out with perched out--which doesn't exist, as far as I know.
