Hi,
β€œLearning to drive can be difficult, but I’m sure that if you
a. persevere you will be able to do it eventually."
b. are determined you will be able to do it eventually."
Can I use (a) and (b) in the sentence?
Thanks.

Hi Mimi.πŸ‘ Wink ;)
Yes, you could use either (a) or (b) in the sentence. "Persevere" has a slightly more determined meaning than just "determined". "Persevere" implies that you may have failures and setbacks but that you can overcome those. In my mind, "are determined" in your sentence is less strong.
Thank you, GreenWhiteBlue, Dimcl, for your explanation. I understand the meaning of these two words.
I doubt about one more thing:
I noticed that in the first sentence the verb "persevere" is used whereas in the second an adjective "determined". Can I change the first one to the one with an adjective and the other with a verb?
1. Learning to drive can be difficult, but I'm sure that if you are you will be able to do it eventually.
2. Learning to drive can be difficult, but I'm sure that if you you will be able to do it eventually.
Thanks.

No, you can't do this, Mimi. Replace these words with something else and see how they sound ie:

"Learning to drive can be difficult, but I'm sure that if you persevere/work hard/pay attention, you will be able to do it eventually"πŸ‘ Tick :tick:

"Learning to drive can be difficult, but I'm sure that if you persevering/working hard/paying attention, you will be able to do it eventually"πŸ‘ Cross :cross:

It would be like saying "Learning English can be difficult but if you studying hard, you can do it".πŸ‘ Cross :cross:
Thank you, Dimcl.
So I chose the wrong adjective. I remember "persistent". Is the adjective acceptable?
What about the second sentence with "determine". Is it OK?
Thanks.

Yes, you could use "...if you are persistent..."

No, the second sentence with "determine" won't work. You could say:

"Learning to drive can be difficult, but I'm sure that if you to learn, you will be able to do it eventually.

This is rather old-fashioned and stilted-sounding. "are determined" would be the way that native-speakers would say it 99% of the time.
