raw physicality

Hello,

The hymns of my childhood were clogged with cleft rocks, harvest fields, lost sheep, and bloody fountains. Not everyone liked these troublesome, coarse metaphors of the Christian Faith, but their raw physicality captured me as a child.

From Let There Be Night: Testimony on Behalf of the Dark by Paul Bogard

phys•i•cal•i•ty (fiz′i kali tē), n., pl. -ties.

1. the physical attributes of a person, esp. when overdeveloped or overemphasized.
2. Psychology preoccupation with one's body, physical needs, or appetites.
physicality - WordReference.com Dictionary of English

How can I interpret “raw physicality” here?
OED has a better definition:
The fact, state, or condition of being physical (as opposed to mental, spiritual, etc.).

All these things (if they weren't metaphors) have a physical existence, and quite a distinctive physical existence at that, which I think is what the writer means by "raw".
