Hi,
I'm trying to translate the phrase 'ils doivent renfoncer leur présence sur la place,' but can't find the word 'renfoncer' in any dictionary. I think it might mean 'reinforce' or something along those lines, but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
It's definitely 'renfoncer'
Thankyou, that makes much more sense.
No wonder you can't find "renfoncer" in any dictionary, it doesn't exist. It's definitely "renforcer", which means precisely "reinforce". It must be a typing error.
No, I don't believe it's a typo. I just came across 'renfoncer' in Colette's Claudine à l'école: "Je renfonce mon envie de pleurer..." From what I can gather from the context and the WR definition of 'renfoncement' being 'recess,' it must mean 'to hide, conceal, or hold back.'
here it can't be anything else than "renforcer".
But "renfoncer" exists. it means "enfoncer à nouveau".
In Colette's phrase it means more or less "I stifle".
Also--Antonia White's translation renders the sentence as "I thrust back my desire to cry..."
Thanks for the welcome!
