retire

Hi,

I'm not sure if "retired' here means, go to bed or stop eating!? Here, Harold is eating breakfast, and then he goes to his room in a hotel.

He chopped the bacon rasher and sausage into scraps and hid them in a tidy line beneath his knife and fork, like David used to; and then he retired.
Back in his room, Harold attempted to smooth the sheets and floral quilt over the bad.... .

Thank you for your help.
It's part of "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry"by Rachel Joyce, British writer.
Hi, dear owlman. Thanks for your kind reply. Of course here, he goes to his room, and after smoothing his bed, and washing himself, leaves the room.
