run interference

Hi, what does "run interference" mean? The context is a wife wants her husband to go shopping with her: Kurt- You go. What do you need me for? Roxana- I need you to run interference while I go for the best bargains and to hold all of the bags and packages while I shop. What else? Kurt- When I agreed to “for better or for worse,” I didn’t anticipate this!I asked a British, he said he never heard of "run interference". The phrase doesn't make any sense to him. What do you think? Thanks a lot.
It probably did not make sense to your British friend because it's an American football reference. A football player who runs interference stops opposing players from obstructing the player with the ball on his own team from advancing towards the goal. In your excerpt, Kurt will protect Roxana from other shoppers trying to stop her from grabbing the items she wants to buy, perhaps by physically blocking them. It sounds a bit like an American "Black Friday" retail store scenario, where the sales attract shoppers who can get physically violent when trying to get limited quantities of a desired item at a steep discount.
Now I see. and I'll let my British friend know about this too.👁 Smile :)
Yes, you're right, they are talking about after Christmas sale. Thank you!
