Shameful

Hi,

Does the word "shameful" work in the sentence below? Some Web site on English grammar says it has to be "shameless," instead of "shameful."

"It is shameful to sneer at those who are poor."

And it's incorrect to say "you have nothing to be shameful of," isn't it? "Ashamed" is the right word, I think.

Thank you.

Yes, certainly, to the first question; shameful indicates very strong disapprobation.

To the second: we would say you have nothing to be ashamed of, as you suggest.
Hi Thomas,

Thank you for making it clear. It looks like the Web site I referred to contains some errors.

I appreciate your help.

If you use shameful as an adjective, you could correctly say:

1. "...you have nothing to feel shameful about..."
2. "...you have nothing to feel shameful for..."

This may not correspond with your original question, though.
