What is the meaning of smack in this context:

I haven't heard this use of "smack" in a while, but it means "provocative, insulting talk". When I was a teenager in the 70s, I used and heard "talking smack" fairly often: He just called you a coward. Are you going to let him talk smack about you that way?
That explains the meaning. It is interesting that the book was published in 2014.
