Hy, I'm reading a short article about Bruce Chatwin, a british writer. The text begins so:

"To escape or to explore? The spur behind Bruce Chatwin's absurdly romantic nomadic existence has become something of a literaly conundrum"

I found different meanings of "spur" (here is a link) , but I don't understand which one could fit in this context.

I suppose it means something like: reason, secret

Can anyone help me, please?
Hi,

A spur, literally, is a small sharp piece of metal, worn on the boot and used to encourage a horse to go faster. Therefore, used figuratively, it means something like motivation - the thing that drives you to do something.

I hope that helps

It's meaning two - 2. Something that serves as a goad or incentive. It's whatever provoked him to wander, the incentive, the impulse, the motive force.
