stack or pile

Stack means the books were sitting one directly atop of the other. A neat stack. A pile does not indicate any arrangement purely vertical. In fact they may not even be flatly piled.

Nothing much, although a stack is probably tidier than a pile. Do you have a problem with the definitions in the dictionary?
Not just a little pops 👁 Smile :)
. It clears it a lot. I realize that my question is rather silly, but as most students do, I follow definitions. Macmillan's definitions are quite similar and confusing. Stack is neatest of all, of course. Neat pile is not as neat as a stack is.

Thank you 👁 Smile :)
Yes I do, Andy and I am probably not the only one 👁 Frown :(
. So, a neat/tidy pile is not as tidy as a stack?
It's always worth mentioning that in your question. A pile of books could be tidy, but it isn't usually. pops91710's pictures are good, and I think they make the difference clear.
